Qualitative research is necessary to help Singaporean businesses formulate a strategy for growth and development. Most of the companies in the country use traditional market research methods like focus group discussion in Singapore to generate the attitudes and opinions of their target audience regarding their products and services. It is also used to determine how the public will perceive new concepts or the overall brand.

Focus groups can provide a wide range of information and insights regarding a particular topic. A market research focus group can provide an accepting environment that allows participants to feel at ease when everything is properly executed. It helps them contribute thoughtful answers that are useful in giving the best results in every research.

If your company wants to conduct a focus group discussion, you need to find out the best ways to ensure that the study will come up with the most accurate results that you can use to come up with consumer-based decisions. The focus group discussion will run smoothly if you make the necessary preparations from the start. These preparations include:

  • Identifying Purpose and Objective - Find out all the information you have on hand and determine which details you want to learn from the focus group. You must pick your interests and ensure that it is addressed effectively.
  • Organizing the Event - Choose the best time to conduct the focus group based on your industry. If you want to gather a group of knowledgeable people about your niche, it would be best to host the discussion during a trade show or conference about your trade. It is also ideal for the discussion to be held simultaneously in the venue where the trade show is taking place.
  • Qualifying the Audience - Ask if advertisers or a particular group of members are willing to join your focus group. You may also ask your team or staff to recommend individuals they would like to engage with to be part of the discussion.
  • Preparing Your Questions - Before creating your focus group script, you must formulate the best question for your goals and objectives. It is also necessary to maintain a narrow, specific topic to gather qualitative results for decision-making processes. Keep in mind that the entire event should be limited to two hours at most, so ensure that the flow of the questionnaires can allow everyone to express their opinion.
  • Recording the Event - You must also choose how you want to record the discussion to ensure that all details will be considered. You can either take a video to allow you to study your respondents’ facial reactions and body language, or you can choose to do an audio recording. It also allows you to avoid asking someone to do a manual transcription of every discussion that transpired.
Aside from these preparations, you must also be ready to practice the flow of your discussion before the event. For example, you may ask some team members to do the dry run to check if there are any possible logistical problems that you may encounter in the middle of the discussion. All these will help ensure that your focus group discussion will yield the best results.
